The Legacy Behind Jim Corbett National Park

Discover how India’s first national park came into existence and the inspiring story behind its name — a tribute to wildlife conservation and a legendary naturalist.

The roots of Jim Corbett National Park trace back to 1936, when it was originally established as Hailey National Park, in honor of Sir Malcolm Hailey, then Governor of the United Provinces. It holds the prestigious title of being India’s first national park, laying the foundation for wildlife conservation in the country.

In the 1950s, the park was briefly known as Ramganga National Park, named after the river flowing through it. However, it was soon renamed to Jim Corbett National Park, commemorating Edward James Corbett, the legendary British hunter-turned-conservationist and author, who played a pivotal role in creating awareness about wildlife preservation in the region.

Jim Corbett Park is also among the earliest tiger reserves under Project Tiger, launched in 1973. Further expansion in 1991 added a buffer zone, making it one of India’s largest wildlife conservation areas. Since its inception, hunting has been completely banned, protecting not just tigers but all forms of wildlife—including birds, reptiles, and small mammals—ensuring a safe haven for nature to flourish.
